Apps That Make College Life Easier

I’ll be the first to admit that my eyes are glued to my phone. But I look at my phone as a tool. I have ways to stay in touch with family, ways to keep my day-to-day life organized, ways to give and receive important information, etc.

I’m only sharing apps that I personally use and enjoy. There are all apps I use regularly or feel that other students might.

Quizlet

I’m a big fan of flashcards. But when I don’t think my handwriting is good enough, I can end up rewriting the same thing a million times. It ends up being a waste of time. That’s why I use Quizlet now. I can get all of my notes transferred very easily into neatly printed flashcards that I can print OR access through my phone moments before my exam!

Venmo

Going out with friends is a constant game of, “I forgot my wallet. Can you spot me?” Venmo is a huge lifesaver in those moments. I’m almost always using Venmo.

Spotify

Walking to and from classes is so painfully boring without something to listen to. For college students, Spotify premium is half the price and includes Hulu and Showtime!

Calendar

I prefer to use Google Calendar for my planning and scheduling. It’s super easy to use and I can use it to schedule so many different aspects of my life by color coding. For example- blog related events are purple. I can scroll quickly through my calendar and the bright purple labels help me see right away when something needs to be done.

Postmates

When I’m rushing to get assignments done, I can never find the time to make myself something to eat. That’s why I worship at the feet of Postmates. Postmates makes it so east to get food from nearby restaurants delivered to your door. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used Postmates since I’ve been in college. It’s almost routine!

Blackboard

My university uses Blackboard as the platform for classroom communication and access to materials. I use the blackboard app to see what’s on my syllabus when I am not around the printed copy. I can also use it to communicate with professors and classmates, check due dates, and submit projects I complete on my phone.

Reflecting on My 2019 New Year’s Resolutions & Making New Ones For 2020

At the end of 2018, I wrote 2019 New Year’s Resolutions where I listed my goals for the incoming year. I’ll be honest with you- I forgot I even posted that until yesterday. I figured today I would go back and see if I succeeded with any of them.

2019’s Resolutions

Life

“Give myself more time to relax”

I knew I needed a lot more me time so I did all I could to make that happen. I gave myself breaks from going out with friends and family as a way to decompress from everything. Sometimes that meant staying in bed all day watching tiktoks and other times it meant writing content and planning out upcoming months. Very soothing.

“Don’t push things off until the last minute (plans, school, etc.)”

Oh, I’m the best at procrastinating, so I promise you no adjustments were made here. Just this last semester, I waited until the day before a final project was due to even look at the assignment. Cool, right?

“Get active”

I sort of got there. I do a lot of walking, and I did some exercising for a little while, but nothing crazy. My sister, Rianna, and I have talked about going to the gym more this year, so hopefully I’ll get that squared away.

“Do something out of my comfort zone”

I tried my best in 2019 to do things I wouldn’t usually do and it was a lot more difficult than I expected. Anxiety is a bitch, as I’m sure a lot of you know. But I actually am very proud of myself for the progress I made in 2019. I went to concerts with my sister and made new friends, both of which are usually terrifying to me.

“Be more confident in myself”

In 2019 I learned that this may be up and down for a while. Some days I loved myself and had so much confidence and other days it pained me to look in the mirror. If I look at things accumulatively, I suppose I was a bit more confident in myself in 2019 than the year prior.

I definitely read a lot of textbook material this year, but not a lot outside of school like I originally wanted to. It was one of those things where I just couldn’t find the time to open a book that wasn’t poetry.

“Journal”

I gave up on that one pretty quickly. I journaled whenever I was going through things and it helped me get over whatever was going on, but I never really journaled about positive things.

“Take lots of pictures”

Oh, trust me, I nailed this one. I love taking pictures to capture moments. I have so many pictures from the past year! I also have a lot of videos!

“Eat healthier”

I was back and forth with this one. Some days were good, but then I’d go into a dark hole filled with potato chips and chocolate bars. Yikes. I’ll do better this year. I promise!

“Drink more water”

After I got myself a cute reusable to take to all of my classes, I was never without water. I kept hydrated pretty easily and my skin thanked me. Now if I go a couple days without drinking lots of water, you can tell by the inevitable volcano-like pimples I get on my face!

“Stop using plastic straws”

I did really well for a while with this one by carrying my reusable metal straws with me wherever I went, but then it became a chore and- sad to say- I failed. I’m trying again in 2020, so we’ll see if I do any better this year.

Blog

“Follow a posting schedule”

I was able to do it for a while, but life got a little chaotic and I stopped. It was on/off for a few months, but I still got posts out at least a couple times a month, I think.

“Only post what makes me proud”

I’ve gotten better at making sure my content is something I’m truly proud of instead of what I think I should be posting for either clicks or approval. I think I’ve really narrowed down how I want to run this site and what kind of media should be on here. 2020 will bring a lot of changes!

“Be more confident in my writing”

Some days I was, others I wasn’t so much, but looking back at all I got posted in a year, I’m very proud of myself for keeping up with it more than I had any year before.

“Post at least once a week”

Haha. Well we all know that didn’t happen.

“Meet more fellow bloggers”

Yes! I met so many awesome bloggers who I’d consider good friends of mine now! They helped me figure out where I was wanting my blog to go and what I would have to do to get there. They’ve also given me a lot of inspiration and motivation.

“Take risks with my work”

I definitely took a few risks with things I wanted to do with my blog and some really paid off. I also made a lot of plans for things that I want to do that will take more time. But I guess the idea for said “risks” were made in 2019, so I’ll count those too.

2020’s Resolutions

Megann Louise in 2020

Happy New Year! I hope everyone celebrated safely!

I, for one, rang in the new year in my pajamas. That’s right, no big “roaring 20’s” party for me. In typical Megann fashion, I was feeling a little under the weather so I decided to stay home and watch the ball drop from the comfort of my parents’ house.

I spent the last couple days of 2019 laying out the groundwork for what will be a transformative year for MegannLouise. I made it my New Year’s Resolution to make big changes with my online presence, so of course my top priority is to get my blog looking neater. I have so many crazy ideas that I can’t wait to get started on. There’s so much I can’t really share yet, but trust me- it’s going to be wild.

I can say that I will be posting regularly now, which has been something I’ve really struggled with in the past. It’s crazy to think that I finally figured out how to keep things going without big gaps when I used to pull my hair out over it. We’re going to leave inconsistency in 2019!

I’m also hoping to step my photography game up so I can include more pictures in my posts! I’m a visual person so that’s always my favorite part of reading others’ uploads.

OH! I plan to be using my Facebook page a lot more this year, so click here or the link below to like and follow along with everything I share on there!

This year is going to be so full of change and I can’t wait to see where it takes us!

Paying Homage to 2019

Can you believe this is my third year writing my yearly recap? I can’t!

So for those who don’t know, at the end of every year I like to highlight some of my highs and lows of the year (see Paying Homage to 2017, Paying Homage to 2018). I started in 2017 as a casual post, not thinking I would keep up with it the following years. I always consider the third time to be what establishes something as a tradition, so here we are guys! It’s officially a Megann Louise tradition!

In last year’s recap, I said I was going to make 2019 my bitch. Well, we win some, we lose some, right? Whenever I look back on this year I get a bad taste in my mouth. I know a lot of great things happened, but I also experienced a lot of heartache. I’d consider this year to be one of great growth for me.

At the start of the year, I got to see Cody Ko and Noel Miller live with my sister and friend James. Their Youtube videos were what got me through a lot of hard stuff so it was wild that I was in the same room as them.

In May I finished my first year of college at CSU. I ended up making the Dean’s List, which I would not have expected at the beginning of the year. I finally decided on the right major for me in that time too- communication.

I moved out of my first apartment in May, too. It was the ending of an era, I suppose. That place became my home. I made so many wild memories in apartment 509. As sad as I was leaving, I felt a weird sense of relief too. I was leaving behind a piece of me, which was sort of sad, but I knew I was starting a new chapter.

67341634_2614962171898080_5998783296224362496_n.jpg

In July, I surprised my sister with a party for her 18th birthday. It was pretty last minute, but all her friends pitched in and helped me make things work. I was so grateful for everybody’s help in making it such a success. Being able to do something like that for my sister was so special to me.

Then there was a bump in the road. I said goodbye to a nearly two year relationship. Things just don’t work out sometimes and it’s for the best. I still have a ridiculous amount of love and respect for my ex. He’s a great guy…. just not my soulmate. And that’s alright. It took me a while to move past the heartbreak, which is to be expected when you were with someone for a long time. He is genuinely one of my best friends and I’m so lucky to still have him to confide in whenever I need him. While some would expect me to be sad that the relationship ended, I’m glad that I’m still lucky enough to have a friend in him.

For a while after the break up, I was in a really dark place and couldn’t seem to find the way out. I didn’t feel half as confident as I once did. I suppose it’s normal (but in no way healthy) to dog on yourself after a break up… at least for a little while. After I was finally able to get myself out of bed, I was going out to get my mind off of everything. That’s where the fun came in.

First, we went to see Granger Smith. The story behind that one is a little random. We had gone to Walmart and there were two tour buses in the parking lot (which obviously isn’t a normal thing). Turns out Granger was at Walmart! We didn’t get to see him there, but we took it as a sign that we should buy two tickets to the show that was only hours away.  I have to say that that was one of the best nights I’d had in a while. The rush we felt after buying the tickets was insane. We immediately ran to get ready and blasted Granger throughout the house.

The very next night, we were invited to tag along to a Foreigner concert. I didn’t know too many songs (I know, what’s wrong with me?!) but I still had such a good time. I think that’s one of the first nights where I was able to fully drop every bad thought at the door and enjoy myself.

In late August, I moved back to Cleveland with my little sister for school. We got a new place with two other roommates that’s a lot nicer than the one I lived in the year before. I started what is the second semester of my sophomore year. Rianna, my sister, began her first semester as a freshman! The semester came with a lot of adjusting for us both and somehow we made it through all of the headaches.

69646166_2702449293149367_5465703551856541696_n.jpg

For the second year in a row, my dad, sister, and I went to the Cleveland Air Show. When I was little, my dad always talked about taking us. Then finally last year, we got to go. I’ll be honest- I didn’t think I’d enjoy it all that much. But it was so much fun, that I was jumping up and down over getting to go again this year. I’d love for this to become a tradition!

69566432_2706053586122271_6932948673198292992_n.jpg

To reward ourselves for kicking butt the first few weeks of school, Rianna and I went to our first Cleveland Indian’s game! I’ve never been a die hard baseball fan, but the atmosphere was so fun and I really enjoyed myself. I was still trying to recover from a lot mentally so that night was a breath of fresh air for me. Fun fact- I also bought my first legal drink at the game!

School got progressively more challenging and I went into a downward spiral. I started doing things I swore to myself I would never do. I just lost control of who I was. That’s when I reintroduced myself to faith. I let myself stray from religion in the past few years and by coming back, I felt myself finding closure and motivation to overcome everything I was facing.

Then I did something out of my comfort zone. After having several deep talks with my friend Kaleb, I found motivation to share my story. I went live on Instagram. I came clean about everything I had been feeling because I hoped being transparent would not only help me, but help someone watching. I was open about things that most people would consider taboo. Laying it all out on the table really helped me see the bigger picture. I even got some super sweet messages from people who watched to livestreams. There was so much support and understanding. It was beautiful. I don’t imagine I’ll ever get over that.

Shortly after, I reconnected with a friend I made during my first semester of school at CSU. We got lunch and caught each other up on our lives. We both had some wild stories to tell and a lot of laughs to share. I was really excited to have this friend in my life because he was absolutely hysterical and genuinely a great guy to be around.

I’m so excited to be saying goodbye to this transformative decade. I’ve got a lot of goals for 2020. I want to make it a year of hard work and big steps. I refuse to end 2020 in the same place that I start it. It’s time to grow, baby!

Thank you to everyone who stuck around for another year as well as those who stumbled upon my site this year! You guys make each and every year so special. I hope you all have a magnificent new year and get all you want and need!

A Mood Board For My Dream Home

Something that’s really been motivating me lately has been making plans for the future. I love scrolling through Pinterest and telling myself, “this is what I’m working so hard for. I’m going to get here.” Anybody else?

My biggest motivation of them all is the thought of working my butt off to be able to buy a house and decorate it exactly how I’ve always wanted. Whenever I’m struggling in class or having a bad day all around, I like to scroll through Pinterest and find more inspiration for my dream home. It’s so calming.

I thought today I would share some of my favorite pins so far because I’m getting really eager to buy and design a home! You can definitely tell what style I’m going for!

To The Girl Going Through A Break-up

I see you.

I know you’re getting frustrated with yourself for crying at night. You want a peaceful night without the pain. But it’s ok to cry. It’s ok and completely normal to grieve the loss of something that cannot come back. Don’t be ashamed.

I promise that you’re healing.

It doesn’t come overnight. You may feel like you’re in the same rut day in and day out, but you’re making progress. I promise you that it won’t feel like it at first and that’ll suck… but it’s happening.

So cry.

Cry because it’s good for you. Cry and eat all the chocolate you can find. Then go buy more. That’s ok.

But here’s what you can’t do.

You can’t force them to come back. You can’t beg. You can’t forget your worth.

You have to focus on your own healing. Figure out how you will move forward. You don’t need to know right away, either. You can spend some time being lost. You’re allowed to be lost. If you were never lost, how can you be found?

What Happened to Blogmas?

Hey guys!

Some of you have noticed that Blogmas stopped dead in its tracks a couple weeks ago. I was hoping we could just sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened, but I guess it’s harder than I thought. So I guess I’ll quickly go over everything that happened that made this year’s Blogmas a total bust…

Problem #1

As you guys may have known, I had finals the second week of December. To make ensure posts would be ready and uploaded during finals week, I spend a whole day pumping out a week’s worth of content. Those posts were scheduled for upload, right? HA. Wrong.

Everything looked as if it was scheduled and ready to be uploaded, but for some reason all the settings were screwed up. Just my luck. I didn’t notice for a few days, but then I finally made them public.

Problem #2

This one pissed me off to my core.

I like to type out my posts on Word before uploading them. I spent another two days writing out posts ahead of time after I figured out the situation with scheduling. Then my computer said, “hey, let’s ruin Meg’s day,” and lost all of my blog files. That included photographs, featured images, and posts themselves. Coolio…

So instead of working my butt off a third time to rewrite everything, I decided to take some time away from my computer. That’s why nothing has been up in a minute.

I’ve been pulling hair out of my head for weeks over Blogmas, so I’ve decided to call it off. I think I definitely jinxed myself when I first said this year’s Blogmas would be so much better than last years!

Anyway, I’ll still be making posts throughout December, so don’t worry. Shitty content is still on the agenda! I’m just done bulk-scheduling posts for a while.

The Christmas Tag | Blogmas 2019

So I found this Christmas tag going around, and I wanted to take a stab at it! Tags are a lot of fun and I especially love the ones about the holidays because people share some really cool stories and traditions!

What’s your favorite Christmas movie?

I’ve never really been a big fan of Christmas movies, but there’s one I have to watch every year- the Santa Clause series!

Have you ever had a white Christmas?

A lot as a kid, but it hasn’t been as often anymore. It seems to snow right before and right after Christmas, leaving the the ground as slush on Christmas Day.

Where do you usually spend your holiday?

Normally at home. We prefer to open gifts and relax for the rest of the day.

What is your favorite Christmas song?

Rocking Around the Christmas Tree for sure! That song gets stuck in my head year round!

Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

Some years we get a little impatient. We’ve actually opened all our gifts on Christmas Eve Night before. It’s definitely not as fun as waiting until morning.

Can you name all of Santa’s reindeer?

I just tried and it went terribly wrong.

What holiday traditions are you looking forward to this year?

We don’t really have too many traditions anymore.

Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

FAKE!!!!!

What is your favorite holiday treat/food/sweet?

Gingerbread men! I have big heart eyes for them!

Be honest, do you like giving or receiving gifts better?

Giving. 100%.

What is the best Christmas present you ever received?

I think it would have to be my first cell phone. I think I was 9 when I got it. We finished opening presents and one of the boxes started ringing. I was so confused!

What is your dream place to visit for the holiday season?

I would LOVE to go to Texas. I’m not sure why, but that’s the dream.

Are you a pro present wrapper or do you fail miserably?

Oh I am the worse wrapper ever! I always end up getting my fingers taped in there somehow!

Most memorable Christmas memory?

Ok this one is a little funny. A few years ago, my parents made the joke that they bought me a toilet for Christmas. Why? I don’t know. But they got a toilet box, filled it with weights, and threw some containers of chocolate frosting in there (my favorite). So this whole time I was thinking I was unwrapping a toilet (again…. why?) but I was actually unwrapping chocolate frosting!

What made you realize the truth about Santa?

When I was little, I thought I was a sneaky little thing. My parents told me Santa had a universal key that unlocked the doors that didn’t have chimneys. So that means Santa has to touch the door knob, right? Well, before bed, I snuck some chocolate pudding all over the door knob. Then, in the morning I checked to see if Santa left any finger prints in the pudding. I didn’t see any. That was enough evidence (or lack thereof) for me to stop believing.

What makes the holidays special for you?

I genuinely love the quality time with my family. There’s nothing better than the laughs we share on Christmas morning!

December Update| Blogmas 2019

Before I get into today’s post, I have some side notes. I want to let everyone know that there was a slight scheduling mishap with my last three posts. For some reason, they never went public! But they’re up now, so check out My Winter Bucket List , Stocking Stuffers for College Students , and Photos I Want to Take This December! Also, I know this post is going up a little later than usual, and that’s because I really wanted to get this up TODAY but I also wanted to spend some time with my family relaxing. And again, finals are coming up so I’ve been hitting those books any chance I get!

Today I wanted to give you guys a little update on what I’ve been up to and how I’ve been feeling. I don’t want this whole blog to just be me talking about how I’m doing, but sometimes I like to check in and write in my “digital diary.”

Lately I’ve been doing pretty well. Things really seem to be looking up for me. Sure, little things have pushed my buttons here and there, but I haven’t let anything get to me for long.

I got to see an old friend of mine for the first time in almost two years, which is so crazy to think about! Andy had been in Japan doing his tough guy USMC thing and hadn’t been home since before we graduated high school. It was so much fun getting to see him and other old classmates of mine!

I’ve been focusing a lot on school lately, which is good for me. I was letting my poor mental health dictate whether or not I attended class or completed assignments for so long that my grades were taking some hard hits. I had to really buckle down for a couple weeks and study like crazy. I have finals tomorrow and Tuesday that will really be make it or break it for me. Keep your fingers crossed or send prayers if that’s your thing. I’ll be welcoming of whatever positivity you throw at me!

In other news, I’ve met someone. He’s really freaking cool and I can’t think of a single time that we’ve hung out where we haven’t been dying laughing together. Good signs, right?

I don’t want to say too much yet because I’m sure once the time is right, I won’t shut up about him. I guess you’ll hear more soon!

Quick thanks to everyone who has been keeping up with everything I’ve been doing on Instagram and Twitter while I’ve been taking my sporadic breaks on here! You guys are awesome!

Photos I Want to Take This December | Blogmas 2019

Anyone who knows me knows I love taking photos. My friends get so annoyed with me when I always have my phone out ready to snap a picture! I just really love getting to look back at pictures from special moments because it takes me right back there.

For December, I’ve decided to make a checklist of photos I want to take so I don’t miss out on anything. I figured- why not be that annoying girl behind the camera if that means I get to carry the memories with me forever?

Stocking Stuffers for College Students | Blogmas 2019

Disclaimer: Some of the links provided are affiliate links, meaning  I will make a small commission at no additional cost to you when you make a purchase. Thank you for your support!

Last year I posted Stocking Stuffers for College Students and it seemed to be well received. I thought I would go ahead and update that with some more ideas for 2019! CLICK HERE to see last year’s post!

Candy

I think this one is a given. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t get some sort of candy in their stocking. Hershey kisses in those candy cane plastic tubes are super cute and festive. I love those. I don’t really care for regular candy canes that much, but they also serve as pretty cool stuffers too.

Movies

Walmart always has the $5 movie bins, so you could potentially strike gold and get some classics in the stocking! It’s always fun to watch a movie when there’s time off between classes and homework assignments, so getting a new DVD can also serve as motivation to get assignments done early.

Socks

Everyone knows you can’t go wrong with socks. I just bought some cute pairs at Walmart today- $5 for two pairs. It’s inexpensive and bound to contribute to many comfortable nights down the road. This is an especially good gift for those who are older because comfort is so much more important to us than flashy presents. Especially when we’re walking on cold floors and through 20 degree weather going to class.

Chapstick

Winter is infamous for drying out lips. If you think this is boring, you can always opt for cake batter, pink lemonade, or root beer flavored chapsticks. These may not be conventional, but they sure do come in handy.

Scrunchies

This one is definitely directed toward females, but it’s such a good idea I couldn’t ignore it. Scrunchies are coming back and they’re so cute! You can get so many different patterns and materials, making each one so unique. They’re perfect for days when you sleep in late but still want to make yourself look a little put together. They can pull so many outfits together, even when you forget to brush your hair!

Nail Polish

Getting new nail polishes can always brighten someone’s day. They’re so cost efficient and fun to get creative with. You could go with red, green and blue for the holidays, or you could pick any other color under the sun to add to someone’s collection! It’s so much cheaper (and more convenient) to paint your nails yourself than get them professionally done when you’re dealing with a student’s budget.

Gift Cards

If all else fails, gift cards are the way to go. My family usually goes for the iTunes gift cards that can be used for apps or music. For college students, perhaps gift cards for near by restaurants would be just as valuable.

Earbuds

What college student couldn’t use an extra pair of earbuds? I know I always misplace my AirPods and could use an extra pair of earbuds as backups.

Face Masks

After a long day of classes and homework, we deserve to pamper ourselves!

Pura Vida Bracelets

I’ve seen Pura Vida bracelet becoming popular lately. I have a ton myself and I know a bunch of people who are starting a collection! They have more than just bracelets, too. I catch myself drooling over their necklaces a lot. And good news! If you CLICK HERE, you can get 20% off your purchase at puravida.com, or you can use my code “MEGANNROSECRANS20” at checkout!

Card Games

If your college student has games like Cards Against Humanity or What Do You Meme?, try getting some expansion packs! Games get old after too long of playing with the same cards. Instead of buying a whole new game, save some $$ buy giving those old games a facelift!

If you missed it, I made a Facebook page! It’s where I’ll be sharing behind the scenes work, life updates, and other fun things you won’t see here! Check it out and drop a like!
