Scammers Are Coming for Influencers!

Hi everyone! I know today isn’t my regular posting day- and yes, there will still be a new post on Monday- but I wanted to share an experience with you that I had today. It’s one that I’m sure many influencers have had in their early stages.

First and foremost, if you are a micro/nano influencer with no management team or agency, it’s easy to become a target by scammers. I recently created a business email for my blog and other social media outlets. In doing this, I came across several scam emails offering free products in turn for promotion. Who wouldn’t jump at the offer of free things?!

Something that influencers and personalities without representation must remember is to do research before agreeing on deals and signing contracts.

Before I go into specifics and explain an experience I’ve had, I want to make it clear to everyone that I don’t automatically agree on sponsorships because of the payout. I refuse to promote any product or service that I don’t approve of myself. So when brands that I’ve never heard of reach out to me, I take the offers very seriously and do my research before making any sort of agreement with them. However, I am still very welcoming to any brands willing to collaborate.

An example of a scam experience I have had is of an athletic wear company (which will be referred to as AWC). Firstly, I have yet to review or even be seen in proper athletic wear on my social media. That immediately was a red flag to me. Why would a brand reach out to me if they had not seen any indication that their products would be of interest to my demographic?

After checking their website, I saw every pair of leggings was one sale. They were originally marked for roughly $60 and were on sale for $22. More than 50% off? Every pair? Are you sure?

So AWC had their “representative” get ahold of me. The subject line read “Collaboration Proposal!” Right away I noticed several grammatical errors in the email. I was told that this woman was in charge of ambassador applications and thought that I would be a good fit. Remember that I never posted any athletic wear on my social media. I also never applied to be an ambassador (I mean, I never heard of AWC to begin with). I was told that today only they were giving free products to new ambassadors so I would have to jump quickly at the opportunity.

Something I always do when I get an email from a brand is ask for more information if I don’t feel enough has been provided. I said I was interested in the brand and wanted to know more about the ambassador program.

The reply was sent from a different email, no longer from their rep. The email was also obviously a scam email so I knew right away that this was someone who wanted to con my followers and myself out of money. The email itself was formatted fairly unprofessionally (using emojis mid-email and poor font) and looked like it was translated from a different language, copied and pasted, and sent to me. If no red flags were flying yet, that one was a dead give away.

It read:

” We have our brand new summer collection.

All you have to do is drive traffic to our Instagram and promote our leggings in you page! We will give you a Personal code which you have to share with your followers. Fore very sale you generate us with your Personal code, we give you a *0% commission. We expect you to take pictures with our leggings and send them to us, they will be featured in our page and website”

Then there was a flexing emoji… yeah…

And yes, that was copied and pasted. I did no alterations to that other than replacing the percentage with an asterisk. They definitely disclosed a number.

Then it gave me a link to a private page that showed items for “$0” before I would be scammed into paying for shipping. I had to laugh. How are you guys making any profit if you’re selling every item for more than 50% off WITHOUT ambassador discount codes and also giving ambassadors free items? If you’re going to lie, at least do it well! Your financial department must really hate their jobs…

After I finished up my research on the brand and their products, I discovered that they were most likely dropshipping. This means that they do not have any items in stock. They simply order them from a cheap producer and stick their label on it. I had a hunch when I read a review that said they waited a very long time for their order.

That’s just a little bit of what smaller bloggers/influencers/personalities go through with sponsorships/ambassadorships/etc. If you’re dealing with similar situations, I have a few tips to make sure you and your followers are safe from these nasty money grabbers.

  1. Do your research on the brand- the brand itself, the quality of the product, and reviews given from customers.
  2. Look at the emails used- sometimes it’s easier than other times, but always evaluate the email address they use. Sometimes it won’t even look professional or appropriate for their line of work.
  3. Judge the email- spelling, grammar, format, EVERYTHING. Real brands won’t let things like that slip when they are representing themselves.
  4. Check Facebook pages- some people make pages to alert other people about scams that they’ve fallen victim to.
  5. GOOGLE- always google the brand and rely solely on reviews that are not on the brand’s website. Also try looking up the name of the brand with the word “scam” after it to find any additional information.

These are just a few tips that I’ve used to look into unknown brands. Keep in mind that accepting sponsorships or ambassadorships from companies that you don’t know much about could ultimately look bad for you and put your followers at risk as well.

Much Needed Me Time

Have you ever liked the smell of a candle so much that you keep burning it until there’s no wax left? Well, I’m that candle… and after a long impressive run, I’ve burnt out. I’ve been going to sleep late and waking up in the middle of the day. My laundry has been on the corner of my bed for nearly two weeks and I have yet to do the dirty laundry in my hamper.

I always get a pre-burnout feeling. It’s like the universe is telling me to take a break before I have to take an even bigger one. But I’m pretty thick-skulled and ignored the signs every single time. You know what that means- full brain-purging mental breakdown.

Just a couple days ago, that was exactly what happened. I won’t get into it, but I really do think “full brain-purging mental breakdown” is the best description I could go with.

Whenever I get this way, I like to have some well deserved me time. I usually spend this time in my room watching youtube videos, listening to podcasts, or scrolling through social media. I know a lot of people would think that going on social media is a bad thing to do during me time, but I believe that your me time should be spent doing things that make you feel happy and/or comfortable. For me, I love scrolling on Pinterest and Twitter.

Another thing that I just found that has been great for when I need some time to myself is an app called Sanity and Self. It’s an app for women devoted to self-care. It’s full of guided audio sessions based around all kinds of topics such as relationships, sex, self-love (my favorite), sleep, stress, and yoga. I haven’t invested in the premium features- which allows access to all the audio files on the app- so I can’t give a full review on it. What I’ve seen so far, though, has been pretty impressive. I highly recommend.

Whenever I’ve had a stressful day/week and need a little time to unwind, I like to clean up my bedroom. Having a clean space to detoxify in is key to bouncing back from a burnout, I’m sure we can all agree. Who even likes being in a messy space? I start out by lighting a candle. Afterward, I make sure all of my dirty clothes are in the hamper to get cleaned. Then I fold/hang any other clothes laying around (don’t act like you’re perfect… I’m sure you have clean clothes on your floor too). Once that’s all cleaned up, I make my bed and fluff my pillows. Seconds later, I ruin my freshly made bed by hopping into it.

Sometimes it helps a lot to plan out my week in advance to prevent last-minute stress. I typically use Google Calendar to keep track of what’s going on in my life. I like how easy it is to color code and move things around. I write down blog ideas, special events, things I have to get done, and holidays I’m most likely to forget.

So if you haven’t caught on by now, I like to keep myself occupied whenever I’m alone. I know most people like to relax and do as little as possible, but I love keeping busy.

What do you do when you need some time to yourself?

Reflecting on Two Years Post-Highschool| What I Learned, Experienced, and Became

Yesterday my sister graduated high school. I watched her walk across the stage with her honors tassel, get her diploma from our dad (the School Board President) and toss her cap in the air with the rest of her small class. It was weird thinking that she’s grown up now. Just two years ago, I was the one graduating and she was still learning how to be a student, not an adult.

It really had me reflecting on what all has happened to me in the past two years since I received my diploma. I’ve learned a lot in those two short years and it has shaped me into a completely different person. So what has happened?

1. I  got my first job.

I wrote about this before, but I worked for the Boys and Girls Club Association in my hometown. I got to work with kids, which I absolutely love. Teaching them and showing them that not everyone is a bad guy was amazing. Being a role model to kids who not always had the best home lives is rewarding in and of itself, but getting paid to do it made it even better. I met so many different people who loved helping children and it was inspiring. At the time, I was an early childhood education major so it was a great experience for me.

2. I quit my first job.

28467718_1824214790972826_372995652504455155_n

Damn right I did. Five months later and I was out of that hell hole. To this day, I miss my little kiddos that never failed to put a smile on my face. But the other employees from top to bottom were not the crowd for me. After a while, I learned that I had to do what was best for myself and I turned in my resignation. I remember telling the kids I was leaving. It was torture. But now I’m out of a toxic workplace and I’m feeling so much better. No job is worth my sanity, dignity, and time.

3. I fell in love.

ACS_0022

I fell in love with my best friend almost instantly. We met 10 months before we started dating. I had graduated high school already and he was at the beginning of his senior year. My friends and I supported him at every Friday night football game. We slowly got closer and closer and then we started dating.  When we started dating I felt something different about him. You know how kids feel safe whenever they have a certain teddy bear or blanket with them? He’s my teddy bear/blanket. He’s helped me come out of my shell a lot. I’ve been much better with my anxiety since he’s been there to help me. I’ve never met someone so patient and kind. He really is the best boyfriend ever- although I might be a bit biased- and I love him more and more each day.

4. I went to college.

10776114976__O1A1555

In the fall after I graduated high school I attended a community college but it just wasn’t for me. I was looking into switching majors and they didn’t have my major, so I made the switch to a bigger university. It was the best decision of my life. I was so much happier. I took a semester off between schools to recalibrate and dedicate more time to that job I mentioned earlier. Once I got to move out on my own and get out of my suffocating hometown, I flourished. I made new friends, learned new things about myself, and got to grow into who I was supposed to be. Being in a big city was super different but with the help of my boyfriend and my new friends, it was manageable.

5. I made the Dean’s List.

After a stressful semester and a lot of hard work, I made the Dean’s list in the spring. I surprised myself with that one. I got roughly 28 hours of sleep a week and the only thing keeping me awake most days was coffee. I was constantly studying or planning time to study. It was an endless cycle of stress for me so getting the news that I made the Dean’s list was really rewarding. Now that I’ve found a major that I like, I’m excited to see how it impacts my grades in the future.

After thinking about all the things that went on after graduation, I’ve thought of a lot of advice I would give people in the position I was in two years ago. I know a lot of it is cliche but I genuinely mean every word I say. If even one piece of advice helps one person, all this Hallmark channel bullshit will be worth it.

1. Don’t let other people influence you.

I did this a lot in high school and once I was out, I realized how much control I really had over my life that I had never known before. When you’re chasing the trends or following the crowds, it’s easy to lose control of yourself without noticing it. Use this time to sit down by yourself and make a loose plan for the future. Don’t let yourself think one time about other people’s plans or interests. Think about where you want to be in five years, ten years, etc. Make it your goal to get there.

2. Make memories

Don’t let anything stop you from enjoying these years of your life while they last. Eventually you won’t be able to do these things anymore. The life you live now is what the younger you dreamt of, so you have to make it something he/she would be proud of. The life you’ll live in 10 or 20 plus years will not be like how it is now, I promise you. Make the best of life now so you can look back at it and say you lived it right.

3. Don’t dwell.

Guilty as charged. But please, whatever you do, don’t dwell on the negatives. Bad things happen to everyone. But the way you recover from them says more about you. Don’t waste your time thinking about the bad things that have happened to you in the past. Spend your time making sure the good things are coming your way. We always remember all the little things that go wrong instead of the little things that go right. We need to fix that.

4. Be open to change.

You have to realize that you won’t be the same person forever. The environment around you will change, your friends and family will change, you will change. Be open to it. Be welcoming to change. I had to teach myself that growing up and achieving my goals required alterations to my life. It was hard at first and I was definitely guarded. With time it got easier and now I cross my fingers every day hoping for more changes because that means I’m one step closer to being the best version of myself.

5. Travel.

A county over, a state over, a country over- who cares? Just travel. Meet new people and visit new places. Remind yourself that this world is bigger than your hometown. You could end up anywhere in the future and that’s really helped me open up my eyes. I didn’t go too far from home, but it was just far enough to give me a taste of diversity.

6. Love with your whole heart.

No half-assed love here. If you love someone, prove it. Nobody is required to stay in your life forever. You need to show them what they mean to you. Give them attention, support, and stability. And if you aren’t willing to do that, let them go. Don’t be selfish. Love wholeheartedly or not at all.

7. Leave your judgment behind.

If you think you can leave high school and keep being a judgmental prick, you have another thing coming. It’s not cool dude. I was that person who judged every book by its cover. Once I went off to college I got to know people for who they really were- their interests, stories, and personalities. Life outside of high school isn’t cliquey and I don’t think I want that to change. So don’t bring that shit into the real world, please and thank you.

Behind the Scenes of Blogging

Hi everyone!

I hope you all had a great week and are ready to tackle another one! The past week for me was pretty eventful. My family and I did some more yard work and I finally got to unpack some more of my things from the apartment. There’s still a ton left to do in preparation for my sister’s graduation party (in 25 days) so it’s been a race against time.

Today I wanted to go into depth about blogging and everything that goes into it. I’ve been wanting to do this for a while but I’ve always brushed it off hoping that one day it would just write itself. But here I am, bundled up and comfy in bed, ready to take on this topic once and for all.

Making a Website

There’s a bunch of different ways that you can make a website for your blog. A lot of people think that making a blog is expensive, but that’s not always the case.

The first thing to do is to choose the hosting site you want to host your blog on. You can either self-host or use a free hosting option. A web hosting provider is basically a helpful hand for making your website. They provide their own tools as well as templates to create your website. By self-hosting, you can have much more of a say in what your website looks like by coding.

My very first blog was through Blogger. As a newbie in the blogging game, 12-year-old me didn’t know much at all. Blogger was super simple for me, so even though the site wasn’t that special content-wise, it still looked really neat. Now I’m using WordPress, which has given me so much more control over my website. I pay annually for my website, but don’t worry frugal friends- there’s a free plan too!

Another important step is figuring out a name for your blog. This shouldn’t be taken lightly. The name you choose for your blog is what people will recognize you as. You want it to be easy to remember and preferably short, sweet, and to the point. Think about it- when was the last time you remembered a long URL and typed the whole thing into the address bar correctly? It’s a rare occurrence.

Post Planning

Planning posts ahead of time is a great stress reliever. I like to use Google Calendar to schedule my posts. I love the color coding and overall layout of the calendar. It helps a lot to be able to jot down ideas and then drag them around until I find the perfect fit for the month.

I usually try to plan my posts around pre-existing categories that I have for my site. These categories are what I want my blog to be centered around. When I’m scheduling posts for the month, I like to look back at the recent categories I’ve written about. I monitor which do well with my audience as well as myself, and most likely those will be the categories I base my new posts around.

Whenever I can’t think about anything to write about, I ask other people for their advice. Sometimes I go to my Instagram story to ask my followers for ideas directly, and other times I will ask random questions that inspire a post.

Making Money

I don’t recommend blogging to people whose main goal is to make money. There’s a lot that goes into making money from a blog. If you aren’t motivated by putting out great content for people to enjoy, your fire will die out quickly when you see how much time and effort it takes to make even a dollar from blogging.

I run ads on my site in order to pay off my yearly subscription to the plan I use to keep my domain and host my website. With the plan that I have through WordPress, I cannot use Adsense to my blog, but I can allow ads through WordPress’ ad system. These ads don’t pay much at all, unfortunately, and their rates are always changing. I know it’s taboo to talk about your earnings, but I want to be transparent about this. I can’t even calculate my average income through ads because it fluctuates so much from month to month. One month, my site displayed 1,041 ads and I made one cent. The next month, my site only showed 322 ads and I made one cent again. If you’re hoping to make better money through ads and you use WordPress, I suggest spending the extra money for the Business plan, where you can connect Google Adsense to your site and make more money at a steadier rate.

Another way you can make money through your blog is with brand deals. Brand deals are usually presented to blogs with a good online presence. Some brands will do deep dives into your site to make sure you are a right fit to represent and promote them. Before reaching out to brands, it’s important that you have a media kit to provide them. As we speak, I’m working on my media kit to be able to present my blog to brands. There’s a lot that happens behind the scenes of brand deals, so if you’re interested in the process, let me know and I can write a separate post all about that!

Promoting

It’s important to promote your blog, especially if it’s a source of income for you. Social media helps a lot with promoting your site. I personally like to share links to my new posts on all of my social media platforms after they’re posted. That ensures that different people will see the link and some will even see it more than once.

I get a lot of traffic through Instagram stories, Facebook posts, and tweets when I share links to my posts. Another way I share my posts is through Snapchat stories with a swipe-up link embedded. But each person is different and I encourage everyone to take a stab at promoting on social media. It’s a shameless plug.

Networking

One of my favorite parts of blogging is meeting new people. I’ve met a lot of fellow bloggers through WordPress, and their support is amazing! It’s so fun to talk to people who share the love for writing that you have. It’s also nice to bounce ideas off each other from time to time.

Like I mentioned earlier, you make money through networking with brands. Media kits help a lot in the networking process by providing stats and other important information regarding your blog to brands to show them who you are and whether or not it’s worth it to collaborate.

Never Turning Off Your Brain

This is one of the hardest parts of blogging at first. You can never turn your brain off of blogging mode. At first, you have to teach yourself to keep your brain turned on for ideas. You have to train yourself to be constantly listening to conversations, watching the news, and monitoring social media trends to draw inspiration for posts. Now it’s a habit. It happens naturally. My brain won’t shut off even if I try.

Out of all of this, I’ve learned that nothing with blogging is set in stone. Things are always changing and evolving, and it’s my job to ride those waves.

If you’re interested in starting a blog or you’re in the early stages of blogging, I’d love to help answer any questions you have about the platform. Message me and let’s get your site going strong!

Getting Relationship Advice From My Instagram Followers

I hope everyone is having a relaxing Memorial Day. Before I get into this week’s post, I want to thank those who lost their lives defending our country. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

This morning I honored my community’s fallen soldiers with others who wanted to share their respects. I ask that while you are enjoying your hotdogs, cold beers, and three day weekend, you remember the meaning behind this day.

Let’s admit it, being in a relationship is fun… for the most part. Sometimes things can go a little haywire, but the overall fulfillment of being with the person you love makes up for it all. Unless you think you have it all figured out, I’m sure you’ve asked some people for some advice regarding your love life.

The other day, I took to Instagram to ask my followers for their help.

I asked 4 questions to my followers on my Instagram story, and within minutes I had an immense collection of answers from people. It was refreshing to see how many people wanted to offer up their own advice to strangers who may need to hear it.

First, I asked everybody how old they were. Here are the results:

img_8484

Next, I asked what their current relationship status was.

img_8485

Following that question, I asked how long their latest relationship lasted.

img_8486

Finally, I asked everyone what their advice was for others who are trying to have a happy and healthy relationship.

I did get a good mix of both male and female participants in this survey, so this advice is coming from both sides. I really am super grateful for everyone who offered up their tips to help others. Whether these were learned from first-hand experience or not, I don’t know, but I appreciate all of the kind words nonetheless.

I don’t know if you guys notice the same pattern I do, but it looks to me as if communication is really important in a relationship.

I had this whole thing written out with my perspective of all the advice, but I didn’t want this to be me giving advice and no matter which way I spun it, it sounded like I was force feeding my advice to you. I wanted these tips to come from other people who don’t necessarily have other ways to share them with you. So instead of writing out a long summarization of all the advice and data collected, I’ll just say thank you to everyone who contributed, and I hope that their advice can help anyone who needed to hear it.

Follow me on Instagram to participate in future surveys. I also like to ask for opinions on things going on in my life and share my current playlist with my followers. Links to my socials are on the right sidebar!

I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day! See you next week!

Why I No Longer Use Plastic Straws

Last year I was given the opportunity to get a reusable straw for less than 50 cents after a coupon was given to me on an online site. That’s when I started my research into reusable straws and why they are all the talk. What I learned was crazy. Here are some quick facts that I learned when looking into the importance of reusable straws.

  • It is impossible to recycle straws.
  • The U.S. uses 500 million straws a day!
  • Scientists predict that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.
  • Americans use straws at an average rate of 1.6 per day.

Think about the last time you used a plastic straw. Where did it go when you were done with it? I bet you didn’t bat an eye when you threw your straw in the garbage. Most people don’t. They just carry on with their day. I’ll be honest… that was me.

Strawless Lids

Many businesses have made alterations to their policies to enforce the straw-free lifestyle. Starbucks, for example, pledged to entirely remove plastic straws from their locations by the year 2020. They plan to replace straws with recyclable lids (pictured left). They also sell hard plastic cups that you can ask your order to be served in. You can bring those cups back and get all your future orders served in them as well.

I also noticed that my university has banned the distribution of plastic straws as well. It was super exciting to see the movement expand to my university of roughly 17,000 students.

Let’s do the math real quick.

1.6 straws used a day  x   17,000 students =   27,200 straws prevented from entering our environment!

If every student at my university adjusted to the strawless lifestyle for only a day, we could prevent 27,200 straws from getting into our environment!  And that’s just at my school. Do the math for your school and see how many straws your campus would eliminate if they converted!

When I pull my straw out of my purse or backpack, I get a lot of mixed reactions from those around me. I’ve had friends laugh at me and say I’m ridiculous. I’ve also had friends who encourage me and ask where they can get their own straws. It feels good to know that although I am only one person, I am making a huge impact on the people and environment around me.

I have two different styles of straws. I preferred stainless steel over paper, but that was just my choice. If you’re into paper straws, GO FOR IT! At the end of this article, I linked the straws that I use so you can purchase your own and get started on making the change!

The style that I was interested in first was the collapsible stainless steel straw with a hard case. It was really easy to throw in my backpack before school and it’s even attachable to a keychain. I found a better quality version of the one I have on Amazon and I decided to link that one rather than the one I have because there were some issues with mine when I got it. This type of straw is great for drinks with more of a watery consistency because the rubber inside makes it hard for thicker drinks to travel through. So if you’re one who is constantly on the go and drinking water, pop, or juice, check this straw out!

I also own stainless steel straws that are not collapsible, but they came in a pack of four with two different styles- bent and straight. These straws also came with a carrier, however, this one is made of cotton. They’re great for tumbler cups or Starbucks drinks if you’re one of those whose lives just won’t go on without a straw in their frappuccino. These straws come in packs of 4 and packs of 8, so you don’t need to wash one before using another. Each pack comes with at least one cleaning brush (depending on the pack you purchase).

If you STILL think adjusting your straw habits won’t make a change, watch this TEDx Talk by Rachel Lincoln Sarnoff.

A Gifting Guide To Make Holiday Shopping Easier | Blogmas Day 4

Does anyone else get stressed out over gift giving? Don’t know what to get someone?

I worked really hard on a video that was supposed to be posted today, but in WordPress’s good fashion, it won’t upload… even after 2 whole days of loading. You could say I’m a little distraught. But instead of moping, I buckled down and prepared a replacement post for everyone. In yesterday’s post I said I’m not very good at making gift guides, but I decided to challenge myself today.  I chose a few different categories and compiled some different gift ideas that your loved ones would be sure to love. I even added some purchasing links for you guys! I hope you enjoy!
